Hiram College is a small liberal-arts college in the Western Reserve village of Hiram, Ohio. James A. Garfield studied at its predecessor institution and later served as its principal before going on to Congress and the presidency, a history the college still highlights.
Hiram runs on the distinctive "Hiram Plan" calendar — each semester carries a full slate of standard courses that culminates in a single, focused three-week course taken alone, allowing for travel, intensive lab work, or off-campus study without competing against other coursework. Biomedical humanities is a distinctive offering that pairs pre-health preparation with ethics and humanities coursework, and environmental studies benefits from the college's own field station.
The small Ohio village setting is quiet and rural, and the college's James H. Barrow Field Station gives environmental-science and biology students hands-on field access most small colleges lack.
Hiram is not highly selective and reviews holistically, with attention to fit for its small, close-knit academic community.
The three-week single-course terms embedded in the Hiram Plan are worth planning around directly — they are frequently used for travel courses or intensive off-campus experiences that a standard semester calendar would not accommodate.
