Hartwick College sits on a hillside above Oneonta, New York, in the Catskills foothills, sharing its college town with the much larger SUNY Oneonta. It is a small private liberal arts college known for practical flexibility in how students can move through their degree.
Nursing is a signature program with strong regional placement. Hartwick is also known for offering a three-year bachelor's degree option, letting motivated students compress their timeline and reduce cost, and for January-term travel courses that take students off campus for intensive, faculty-led study abroad or domestic field experiences.
The hillside campus overlooks the Susquehanna River valley, and while Hartwick's own enrollment is modest, students have access to the broader college-town infrastructure that Oneonta supports thanks to SUNY Oneonta's larger presence nearby.
The three-year degree option and January-term travel courses are the two features that distinguish Hartwick most clearly from similarly sized private colleges in the region, and both require some deliberate planning by students who want to use them.
