Keystone College is a small private college in La Plume, a rural corner of northeastern Pennsylvania near Scranton, with roots going back to a 19th-century academy. It serves a largely regional, often first-generation student population, and its identity is built around small classes and personal attention rather than a wide range of majors.
Programs run toward practical, career-oriented fields - education, business, criminal justice, and environmental and natural-science coursework that draws on the wooded, rural campus. Environmental science in particular benefits from the surrounding land, which the college has long used for field-based coursework.
The campus occupies a wooded, rural setting outside Scranton, and much of student life stays on campus given the limited surrounding town. Athletics and campus organizations are the main social outlets for a mostly residential student body.
Admissions are not highly selective, and the process is straightforward rather than heavily essay- or interview-driven, consistent with the college's mission of serving local and first-generation students.
Keystone's history as a 19th-century academy and its long-standing role as an accessible option for first-generation students in the region are central to its identity.
