The Summer Academic Research Experience (SARE) at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine gives high school students, primarily from the greater Baltimore area, eight weeks of hands-on biomedical research on the East Baltimore campus, alongside coursework in scientific writing, data analysis, math, and bioethics, with about 70% of time spent in the lab. Scholars are identified in part through partner Baltimore organizations and schools, plus a general online application. It's built for students whose household income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty line and who meet an added hardship criterion, such as being first-generation college-bound, having an incarcerated parent, or a family health crisis. There's no cost to participate, and scholars receive a $3,000 stipend on completion, though housing isn't provided. The 2026 application closed March 1; 2027 dates were not yet posted.
