High school writers spend two weeks immersed in one core course - fiction, poetry, a general creative writing survey, TV writing, or playwriting - taught by graduates of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, alongside readings, craft talks, and social events. Admission is based almost entirely on a writing sample, plus a short statement of purpose and one teacher recommendation; no transcript is required. Need-based aid, including full-tuition scholarships, is available to admitted students.
