Teams of 3–7 students (up to 5 per match) research a set of real-world ethical cases and are judged on the quality of their collaborative reasoning, not on winning an adversarial debate. Teams register with a Regional Competition organizer and with NHSEB headquarters; regional winners move to Divisional Playoffs, and Divisional winners qualify for Nationals, held each spring at UNC Chapel Hill. Any accredited U.S. high school student in grades 9–12 can join a team.
