High schoolers spend three weeks on Interlochen's northern Michigan campus focused on one genre - fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, or poetry - through daily workshops alongside the center's wider community of young musicians, visual artists, and performers; shorter one-week intensives in novel writing, screenwriting, spoken word, and graphic narratives are also offered. Admission is portfolio-based: applicants rank genres by preference and submit writing samples for review. The vast majority of families who apply for aid receive it - 86% last year, with $5.7 million awarded - though one-week intensives are not aid-eligible.
