Carnegie Mellon's Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) brings rising seniors to Pittsburgh for six weeks of college-level STEM classes, hands-on projects, and mentoring from CMU faculty and staff, after a required virtual Jumpstart session. The program is genuinely tuition-free — there's no option to pay out of pocket — and it covers housing and core expenses, so students are only responsible for travel to Pittsburgh. SAMS particularly encourages students from underrepresented and under-resourced backgrounds in STEM to apply, though it describes itself as merit-based. Financial documentation (tax records or a fee waiver) is part of the holistic application review.
