The Garcia Summer Scholars Program pairs high school students with Stony Brook faculty on original materials-science and engineering research, often advancing far enough that students present at a Materials Research Society conference. The program charges a $4,000 lab usage fee plus a $50 registration fee; housing and meals are optional extras. Applicants must be at least 16 by July 4, hold at least a 3.8 unweighted GPA, and score at or above the 60th percentile on a standardized test, with a transcript and three recommendation letters (one from a science teacher) required.
