Founded in 2001 by author T.A. Barron and named for his mother, this national prize honors young people ages 8-18 who have launched an original, self-initiated service project with a real, measurable impact on people or the planet. About 15 winners are selected each year, each receiving a $10,000 award for service work or higher education. The application is a two-step process — a short pre-application followed by a full application — requiring a lead reference letter plus two additional recommendation letters. The 2026 cycle (pre-application March 15, full application April 15) has closed, with winners announced in September.
