The Washington Crossing Foundation awards a mix of national and regional college scholarships, from $1,000 to $10,000, to graduating U.S. high school seniors planning a career of service in local, state, or federal government. Applicants write a 300-word essay on why they're pursuing a government-service career -- including any inspiration drawn from George Washington's leadership -- and submit a counselor or principal recommendation, transcripts, and test scores. Regional tracks give added consideration to residents of Pennsylvania, Indiana, Alabama, Utah, Southern Maryland, and several western states. Winners must attend an awards ceremony in Pennsylvania (travel covered) to receive their scholarship. Applications must be postmarked by January 15.
