The Hoover Presidential Foundation's Uncommon Student Award asks Iowa high school juniors (including homeschoolers) to design and complete a leadership project connected to Herbert Hoover's legacy of public service and humanitarian leadership. Applicants submit a written project proposal and a recommendation form; grades, test scores, and financial need are not part of the evaluation. Fifteen finalists each receive $1,500 upon completing the program, and up to four of those finalists go on to earn an additional $10,000. Finalists must be available for required program dates in June (the summer before senior year) and October (of senior year), and must be U.S. citizens residing in Iowa.
