The Underwood-Smith Teacher Scholars Program, administered by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission through the College Foundation of West Virginia, awards current West Virginia high school seniors up to $10,000 a year (up to $40,000 over four years) toward tuition, fees, room, board, and other approved costs at an in-state, Board-approved teacher-preparation program. Up to 25 new Scholars are selected annually through a three-step application process based on academic achievement, community service, and extracurricular involvement. Recipients commit to a critical-shortage teaching field (math, science, elementary education, or special education) and to teaching full-time in West Virginia public schools for five years after graduation.
