COPS provides financial assistance to surviving spouses and children of law-enforcement officers killed in the line of duty who are pursuing education beyond high school at an accredited college, university, or trade/vocational school. Awards run up to $2,000 per semester with a lifetime cap of $16,000, and students reapply each term. Survivors eligible for a tuition-free state death benefit must apply for and be denied that benefit first.
