NABJ awards a collection of separately named scholarships each year, historically ranging from about $2,000 up to $10,000 each, to high school and college students interested in journalism, broadcast, print or online media, photography, graphic design, and communications. NABJ's own site confirms the program is open to "high school and college students," that membership is not required to apply, and that funds are disbursed in one payment directly to the recipient's school upon proof of enrollment. Applications open online each fall and spring; for the 2025-26 cycle, most named awards (including the Larry Whiteside, Ethel Payne, and LGBTQ+ Task Force scholarships) closed February 27, 2026, with a few others closing earlier (late January) or later (early July) in the cycle.
