The North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program, administered by the University of North Carolina System, provides forgivable loans of up to $5,000 per semester (up to $10,000/year, up to $40,000 over four years for students who enter as high school seniors) to North Carolina high school seniors who commit to teaching elementary education, special education, or a STEM subject (including agriculture education) in a North Carolina public school. Applicants need a minimum 3.0 unweighted high school GPA, two letters of recommendation, and three short essays. College transfer, currently-enrolled, and post-baccalaureate students may also apply, but receive fewer semesters of funding than students who enter as high school seniors. After graduating, Fellows must teach one year in an NC public school for each year of funding received; once that service requirement is met, the loan is fully forgiven.
