First awarded in 1916, the Rensselaer Medal recognizes one outstanding junior in math and science at each participating high school. Each school submits a single nomination by May 1 of the student's junior year; if that medalist later applies to, is accepted by, and enrolls at RPI, the honor converts into a scholarship worth $40,000 a year, guaranteed for all four years ($160,000 total, or five years/$200,000 for the B.Arch. program). Because the nomination happens during junior year, students should ask a counselor about the Medal well before senior year begins.
