Instead of an essay, AFSA's High School Scholarship Contest has students read a short passage on the history, function, and career paths of fire sprinklers, then answer an 8-question comprehension quiz. Winners are then chosen entirely at random by computer from among entrants, with odds depending on the total number of entries; a higher quiz score does not improve those odds. There is no GPA, income requirement, or entry fee; open to U.S. citizens or legal residents who are high school seniors (including homeschooled) planning to attend an accredited college, university, or trade school.
DemographicsSweepstakes-style: winners are chosen entirely at random by computer among entrants, not weighted by quiz score. There is no purchase or entry fee, and the contest is run by an established 30+ year industry trade association
