The American Legion Auxiliary's Department of Alabama sets aside forty $850-a-year scholarships across 13 Alabama campuses -- from the University of Alabama and Auburn to Troy, Jacksonville State, and Alabama A&M -- for descendants of a veteran who served during a recognized wartime era (WWI through Operation Desert Shield/Storm), where the qualifying veteran must be the applicant's own parent or grandparent. The award can renew each year of a four-year degree as long as you reapply and keep a 3.0 GPA. You'll need three letters of recommendation (school, church, and an unrelated friend or neighbor), a transcript, a small photo, proof of relationship, and a copy of that veteran's service record, all received (not just postmarked) at the state office by April 1.
