Connecticut high school students who compete in the American Legion's High School Oratorical Contest deliver a prepared speech on the U.S. Constitution plus a short response to a topic assigned the day of the contest. Winners at the Connecticut state final receive cash awards on top of anything they go on to earn at nationals: $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second, and $500 each for third through seventh. Any Connecticut high school or homeschool student can enter through a local American Legion Post, advancing from post to district to the statewide contest each winter.
DemographicsOpen to Connecticut high school students, public, private, or homeschooled, sponsored by a local American Legion Post; no Legion membership required to compete.
