SECU Foundation's People Helping People Scholarship guarantees at least one four-year, $10,000 award ($1,250 per semester for up to eight consecutive semesters) to a graduating senior in each of North Carolina's 115 public school districts, for use at one of the 16 UNC System universities. The student or a parent/guardian must be a State Employees' Credit Union (SECU) member at the time of application, and the student must be an NC resident admitted to a UNC System campus with a 2.5 or higher unweighted GPA. Rather than judging on academics alone, each district's own selection committee looks for leadership, integrity, and community involvement, with preference given to children of public-sector employees and to students majoring in public-service fields; financial need, while not required, is also taken into account. Applications go through the student's high school counselor rather than directly to the Foundation, and the award continues for up to eight semesters at the same university as long as the recipient stays enrolled full-time with a 2.5+ GPA.
