The R. Flake Shaw Scholarship is North Carolina Farm Bureau's largest scholarship program, named for a former executive vice president of the organization and having distributed more than $3 million since 1967. Each year it funds eight university-track awards of $5,000 a year for four years ($20,000 total) and four community-college-track awards of $1,000 a year for two years ($2,000 total). It's open to rising college freshmen who intend to pursue a career in agriculture or an agriculture-related field, show satisfactory grades, understand agricultural and agribusiness topics, and demonstrate leadership potential; preference goes to students whose families are NC Farm Bureau members. Applications are submitted electronically only, through the Farm Bureau's online forms — paper and email applications aren't accepted.
