The American Legion Department of Ohio awards at least $2,000 a year (the exact amount depends on the Scholarship Fund's annual earnings) to a graduating Ohio high school senior with a 3.5 GPA or higher and an ACT score of 25 or higher who plans to attend college. Applicants must be a direct descendant of a current Ohio American Legion member, or of a deceased member who was in good standing at death. The one-time, non-renewable award is judged on academics, activities, and a personal statement. Separate awards from the same fund are reserved for applicants from six central Ohio counties (Donald L. Lanthorn, $1,000+) and for Belmont County (Durward I. Bernhard, $1,000+).

Award amount depends on the Scholarship Fund's annual earnings; recent awards have run at least $2,000. The same fund also makes a $1,000+ Donald L. Lanthorn award (Delaware, Knox, Licking, Madison, Marion, Morrow, or Union county) and a $1,000+ Durward I. Bernhard award (Belmont County).
