The Toward EXcellence, Access, and Success (TEXAS) Grant is Texas's flagship need-based state grant, funding Texas residents with financial need at public General Academic Teaching Institutions. It is awarded via the FAFSA or TASFA (no separate application) to students who qualify through one of four pathways and enroll at least three-quarters time without yet holding a bachelor's degree. For FY2027 (2026-27), eligibility has expanded to include nontraditional/homeschooled graduates under House Bill 3041.
DemographicsCORRECTED: requires Texas residency. Per THECB's current FY2027 guidelines, initial eligibility requires qualifying through one of four pathways: (1) High School Graduation Pathway — graduate from an accredited TX public/private high school, or complete a nontraditional secondary program (e.g. homeschool, newly eligible starting FY2027 under House Bill 3041), and enroll within 16 months without having attempted more than 30 semester credit hours; (2) TEOG Transfer Pathway (24+ college credit hours with a 2.5 GPA); (3) Associate Degree Pathway; (4) Honorable Military Discharge Pathway. Renewal requires a 2.5 cumulative college GPA. The earlier "recommended/advanced high school curriculum" requirement no longer appears anywhere in the current guidelines and should be treated as outdated, not current policy.
No fixed award amount is published — TEXAS Grant awards are set per-institution based on the student's financial need and the school's state funding allocation, capped at cost of attendance minus other aid, not a statewide dollar maximum.
