The American Legion Department of Texas runs a statewide oratorical contest on the U.S. Constitution for students in grades 9 through 12, sponsored by a local Legion post. Texas's own Department Finals award $2,000 for first place, $1,500 for second, $1,000 for third, and $500 for fourth, and the state champion advances to the national contest for prizes up to $25,000. Contests start at the post level in November and move through district and division rounds before the Texas finals in February. No Legion membership is required to compete.
