Two linked American Legion Department of Michigan scholarships sharing one application, for a total of twenty awards each spring: fifteen $1,000 Guy M. Wilson Scholarships, open only to Michigan high school seniors planning to attend a Michigan-accredited college, university, or trade school; and five $500 William D. & Jewell Brewer Scholarships, open to high school seniors or current students without a bachelor's degree attending any nationally accredited institution. Both require Michigan residency; proof of being a direct descendant (child, step-child, grandchild, or great-grandchild) of an honorably discharged veteran or current active-duty service member (eligible service December 7, 1941-present), with DD-214 or military-ID documentation; a minimum 2.5 GPA with a school-signed transcript; and proof of financial need via a parent's or the applicant's most recent Form 1040. Both are one-time, non-renewable awards, and an applicant who applies for both can win only one. The application includes a short written statement of educational goals but no separate letters of recommendation.
