Each year the North Carolina Press Foundation names a Journalist of the Year from among graduating seniors in the state's scholastic journalism programs, judged by working journalists and faculty. The winner receives the $3,000 Rachel Rivers-Coffey Scholarship, and three statewide alternates each receive $1,000. You'll need at least a 3.0 unweighted GPA and a portfolio spanning at least five categories — reporting and writing, editing, design, broadcast, photojournalism, web/social media, and more — along with an entry form, transcript, personal essay on your "journalistic life," and letters of recommendation. The winner also becomes eligible to compete in the national JEA/NSPA High School Journalist of the Year contest.
