The American Legion's Department of Alabama funds about 110 separate $850 scholarships at 16 specific Alabama colleges and universities, reserved for Alabama residents who are descendants of a veteran who served during a recognized wartime era (WWI through Operation Desert Shield/Storm). Troy University alone holds 75 of the spots, so you'll need to already be headed to one of the listed campuses -- a few, like University of Alabama and Auburn, add a narrower home-county rule on top. You'll need a copy of your veteran relative's service record, an unofficial transcript, SAT or ACT scores, and two letters of reference, all received (not just postmarked) by April 1.
